Overview

Our staff is committed to meet the needs of our students by setting high standards of achievement and accountability. Teachers and principals are trained in successful research based strategies. Instruction is grounded in State Standards while support programs are developed to assist those who are not successfully meeting these standards. We use data to analyze student needs and deliver an academic program that engaged students at their instructional level. Our reading program comes from Houghton-Mifflin. These are examples of programs that help our students become successful.

Instructional Programs

English Language Arts
We follow a balanced, comprehensive literacy program. Teachers provide high quality in reading and writing instruction daily. Students are assessed frequently and the assessments help guide our instruction. Teachers provide universal access time to differentiate and meet the needs of the individual students.

Mathematics
We follow Project G, a lesson design that incorporates direct instruction and gradual release of responsibility. Students are assessed to determine areas of strengths and needs. Project G also emphasizes Beyond the Basic Facts, an opportunity when students can practice basic math facts such as addition and subtraction.

Technology
Technology is a key component to our success. Teachers use technology as an assessment tool with such programs as STAR Reading and Math to identify student needs. Teachers also use email as a tool of collaboration. Students have an account on a network that allows them to access their electronic portfolio on any computer on campus. Students develop standards based multimedia projects in grades 1-6 to reinforce concepts taught in the classroom. Students also utilize the Internet as an enormous resource to supplement information from text books.

Accelerated Reader (AR)
AR is a software-based program that motivates students to read at their own level. In the beginning of the school year, students are assessed to determine their appropriate reading level range. This range is called Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Once the student reads a book, they take a test on the computer. Theoretically, students who read books in their ZPD while scoring 85-92% average correct on the assessment, become better readers in the most efficient manner. The teacher adjusts reading goals over time as the student demonstrates their capabilities. Each trimester, the principal recognizes students who meet their goals. More info about AR can be found here.

Accelerated Math (AM)
AM is a software-based program that allow students to learn math at their own instructional level. After an initial assessment, students are given instruction targeting specific objectives as outlined by the state. A computer generated assessment assists teachers in determining who understands the concept and who needs further assistance. Over time, students are able to work at their own pace while the teacher facilitates group instruction and intervention.

Teachers share ways to prepare children for kindergarten and give parents the opportunity to see sample work from former kindergarten students.

Straight Talk
Students on our campus who need extra help in coping skills or are experiencing difficulty at school, may be referred by a parent or teacher to our Straight Talk counselor who provides prevention and intervention.

Vocal and Instrumental Music
Carrillo School offers a wide range of opportunities for involvement in music. Our music teachers are Miss Paula Wacker and Mr. Dave Martyn. Miss Wacker teaches general music to all K-6 students. She also leads the Carrillo School Chorus, which meets weekly throughout the year. Mr. Martyn directs the instrumental music program. String instruments are offered in grades 4-6, while band instruments are offered in grade 5 and 6. Instrumental groups present concerts each year in December and June.
