RED RIBBON WEEK

 OCTOBER 2008

Home o f the Geckos.  The place where learning sticks!

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largets drug prvention campain in the country. It is one of the many ways for communities, schools and families to unite and take a visibly united stand against substance abuse.  The Red Ribbon Week campaign was started when drug trafficerls in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camerena in 1985.  Fellow officers and colleagues began wearing red ribbons in memory of Kiki Camerena and it soon became a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. At Garden Park Elementary School we support the dream of a drug free America and the concept that one person can make a difference.

During the week of October 20th, Garden Park Elementary School will be actively participating in Red Ribbon Week.  Our Red Ribbon Week coordinator, Andrea Perez, has worked closely with our teachers and students to come up with fun and meaningful activities that will focus our attention on staying drug free. Students will tie red ribbons on the back parking lot fence, wear red clothes, wear their clothes backwards, sign a drug free pledge, and decorate their classroom door with a drug free mantra. A detailed calendar of Red Ribbon Week activities can be obtained by clicking on the Red Ribbon Week Event Calendar 2008 button located in the left pannel.  In addition, if you would like a copy of our individual student pledge, you can receive your very own copy by clicking on the Drug Free Pledge 2008 button located in the left pannel.

A special thank you goes out to Andrea Perez, our RRW coordinator, who diligently worked with students, teachers and community members to make Red Ribbon Week meaningful and enjoyable to all who actively participate.  Kudos Mrs. Perez!
