Supplemental Educational Services (SES)

GENERAL INFORMATION

What Are Supplemental Educational Services (SES)?
These are FREE tutoring services paid for under the No Child Left Behind Act to help your child improve his/her skills in language arts (reading and writing), math, science, and/or English language development.

How do I know if my child qualifies for the free tutoring program?
If your child qualifies for the Free/Reduced Lunch Program and is enrolled at a Program Improvement (PI) school in Year 2 or above, he/she may qualify for free SES tutoring.

Will all children who qualify receive free tutoring services?
No. Parents must apply to receive free tutoring services for their children. Applications are processed in the order received. According to federal regulations, if demand exceeds available slots, priority will be given to the lowest-achieving students who qualify for the Free/Reduced Lunch Program. Other qualified students will be placed on a waiting list.

What is a provider?
A provider is a state-approved private organization, company, or agency that will provide Supplemental Educational Services (SES) for your child.

When will my child be tutored?
Most tutoring sessions will start in the fall. Students will usually meet with tutors 2 to 5 times per week. Parents arrange a tutoring schedule directly with the tutor. Tutoring can be scheduled for after school, evenings, or on weekends. The total number of free tutoring hours available to each student varies by provider, depending on the hourly cost and the available funding as determined by the California Department of Education. Refer to the Provider Brochure for the approximate number of hours of service you will receive.

How do I select a provider (tutor)?
Decide whether you want your child to receive language arts and/or math tutoring. Use the Provider Brochure to find providers working at your child’s grade level and in the subject you have chosen. A variety of tutoring options and services are available. Some providers offer individual (one-on-one) tutoring in your home. Others offer individual or small-group tutoring at school or community center locations. Some providers offer tutoring or classes in their offices. Contact the providers directly if you have any questions about the type of tutoring services they provide, where and when they tutor, or the qualifications of the tutors. You will have an opportunity to meet with providers at a Provider Fair.

Is transportation to SES tutoring provided?
No. Neither providers nor the school district is responsible for transporting students to a tutoring service. If the provider does not supply transportation you will need to make plans to get your child to and from tutoring sessions.

How do I enroll my child in the free tutoring classes?
Fill out the Supplemental Educational Services (SES) Free Tutoring Application. Return the form to your school office or the district office no later than the application due date.

PROVIDER BROCHURE (PDF)

The California State Board of Education is required to identify providers, both public and private, that qualify to provide these services. A list of approved California providers can be found on the California Department of Education website at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ti/ap/sspsearch.aspx. Parents of eligible students are notified by the district that SES will be made available, and parents may select any approved provider in the area served by the LEA or within a reasonable distance of that area that they feel will best meet their child’s needs. The district will mail parents the information about providers that are approved by the local school board. These providers will be listed in the district’s Provider Brochure. The district will sign an agreement with the provider selected by the parent, and the provider will then provide services to the child and report on the child’s progress to the parents and to the district.

The Garden Grove Unified School District’s Provider Brochure lists all the SES providers that are available to provide free tutoring to your child.
