2023-2024 GGUSD Valedictorians

Phillip Nguyen

Bolsa Grande High School: Phillip Nguyen will attend the University of Pennsylvania to double major in Political Science and History and minor in East Asian Area Studies. His accomplishments include receiving early admission and a full-ride scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania through the Questbridge National College Match, receiving two scholarships from the U.S. Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth and receiving the AP Capstone Diploma for exemplary exam scores in AP Seminar, AP Research and four AP courses. Phillip’s favorite high school activities include participating as Vice President of the California Scholarship Federation Club, being Vice President of the United Nations Children’s Fund Club and conducting service projects through the National Honor Society. A resident of Garden Grove, Phillip also attended Morningside Elementary and Irvine Intermediate. He is the son of Tai Nguyen and Sally Tran.

Alexander Tu

Garden Grove High School: Alexander Tu will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Computer Science. His accomplishments include receiving the AP Scholar Award with Distinction, scoring 1560 on the SAT and passing five AP tests in one year. Alexander’s favorite high school activities include volunteering with the California Scholarship Federation Club, watching student and teacher talent shows and volunteering at the library. A resident of Garden Grove, Alexander also attended Peters Elementary and Ralston Intermediate. He is the son of Hao Tu and Simone Ngo.

Phat Dinh

Hare High School: Phat Dinh will attend Golden West College. He hopes to pursue a career as an Artist or Comic Book Series Publisher. His accomplishments include achieving Principal’s Honor Roll, being ASB President, Valedictorian, BRC Member and participating in the Orange County Youth Council. Phat’s favorite high school activities include Top Dawg Video Production, ASB and volunteering. A resident of Garden Grove, Phat also attended Hill Elementary and Jordan Intermediate. He is the son of Xuyen Ho and Huynh Dinh.

Ashley Landeros

Hare High School: Ashley Landeros will attend Golden West College to major in Nursing. She hopes to pursue a career as a Clinical Nurse. Her accomplishments include receiving her CPR Certification, achieving Principal’s Honor Roll and becoming a member of Latinos Unidos. Ashley’s favorite high school activities include college field trips and volunteering in community service projects. Ashley also attended Carrillo Elementary. A resident of Westminster, she is the daughter of Gladys Amezcua and Nicolaz Flores.

Breanna Nguyen

La Quinta High School: Breanna Nguyen will attend the University of California, Irvine or the University of California, San Diego to major in Computer Science. She hopes to pursue a career as a Machine Learning Engineer. Her accomplishments include receiving her GIAC Foundational Cybersecurity Technologies (GFACT) Certification, becoming a National Merit Finalist, Aztec of the Year Finalist and National Cyber Scholar. Breanna’s favorite high school activities include participating in the Robotics Club, National Honor Society and Girls’ League. A resident of Garden Grove, Breanna also attended Ethan Allen Elementary and McGarvin Intermediate. She is the daughter of Bao Quoc Nguyen and Kacee Do.

Rachel Pham

La Quinta High School: Rachel Pham will attend the University of California, Berkeley or the University of California, Irvine to major in Computer Science. She hopes to pursue a career as an Ethical Hacker or Software Engineer. Her accomplishments include ranking first place in Cyber Patriots at the State level, receiving her first paycheck and passing her Professional Network and CompTIA Certification. Rachel’s favorite high school activities include participating in Cyber Patriots, Math competitions and eating lunch with her friends. Rachel also attended Murdy Elementary and McGarvin Intermediate. A resident of Westminster, she is the daughter of Nghia Pham and Thuhong Nguyen.

Lina Tran

Los Amigos High School: Lina Tran will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Neuroscience. She hopes to pursue a career as a Neuroscience Research Scientist. Her accomplishments include receiving the Gates Scholarship, serving as Division 04 North’s Lieutenant Governor and being a Simon Scholar. Lina’s favorite high school activities include eating chicken noodle soup at the tennis courts, riding X2 at Six Flags Fall Rally South and hanging out with LAJJEC after school. Lina also attended Excelsior Elementary and Irvine Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, she is the daughter of Son and Nga Tran.

Valerie Dao

Los Amigos High School: Valerie Dao will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Pharmaceutical Sciences. She hopes to pursue a career as a Pharmacist. Her accomplishments include establishing the UNICEF Club at Los Amigos, achieving AP Scholar with Distinction and earning the State Seal of Civic Engagement. Valerie’s favorite high school activities include playing tennis, serving as an officer for UNICEF, National Honor Society and Make-A-Wish and volunteering at the Discovery Cube. A resident of Fountain Valley, Valerie also attended Ethan Allen Elementary and Fitz Intermediate. She is the daughter of Tiffany Dinh and Nghia Dao.

Jaimie Ko

Pacifica High School: Jaimie Ko will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Applied Mathematics. She hopes to pursue a career as a Mathematics Professor. Her accomplishments include being nominated and chosen as a delegate for the 80th session of the American Legion Auxiliary California Girls State Program, earning a first-place medal in Essay while competing in the Honors Division for the 2024 Academic Decathlon Competition and receiving the Mathematics Medallion Award from Pacifica’s math department in 2020. Jaimie’s favorite high school activities include serving as President of Pacifica High School’s National Honor Society, being Captain of the Academic Decathlon team and volunteering as a Mariner Mentor where she guides freshman through their first year of high school. Jaimie also attended Patton Elementary and Bell Intermediate. A resident of Cypress, she is the daughter of Jason and Cathy Ko.

Kenrich Nguyen

Pacifica High School: Kenrich Nguyen will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Aerospace Engineering. He hopes to pursue a career as a Design Engineer. His accomplishments include earning the Regents Scholarship from UCI, passing eight AP tests and earning the President’s Education Awards Program Certificate for Outstanding Academic Excellence in 2020. Kenrich’s favorite high school activities include playing on the Boys Tennis Team, participating in Chess Club, and serving as Vice President of Students United to Curb Hunger. Kenrich attended Patton Elementary and Bell Intermediate. A resident of Cypress, he is the son of Kha and Phu Nguyen.

Lydia Nguyen

Rancho Alamitos High School: Lydia Nguyen will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Pre-Human Biology and Society. She hopes to pursue a career as a Dermatologist. Her accomplishments include earning the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, receiving the Vietnamese Heritage Museum Scholarship and serving as a Student Ambassador for GENup in Garden Grove. Lydia’s favorite high school activities include being President of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, being President of Student League and participating in the Girls’ League Talent Show. A resident of Garden Grove, Lydia also attended Faylane Elementary and Lake Intermediate. She is the daughter of Nhon Nguyen and Amy Pham.

Tyler Truong

Santiago High School: Tyler Truong will attend the University of California, Los Angeles or the University of California, Berkeley to major in Biochemistry. He hopes to pursue a career as a Doctor or Surgeon. His accomplishments include becoming a California Scholarship Federation Seymour Memorial Award finalist, founding the Santiago High School CHOC Club, receiving the AP Scholar Award with Distinction and creating and handing out Valentine’s Day gifts to children in hospital care. Tyler’s favorite high school activities include playing for the tennis team, volunteering with his SHS CHOC Club and tutoring Calculus. Tyler also attended Parkview Elementary and Walton Intermediate. A resident of Westminster, he is the son of Lily Ly and Hai Truong.

Tan Nguyen

Santiago High School: Tan Nguyen will attend the University of Vanderbilt to major in Analytical Chemistry and minor in Social Psychology. He hopes to pursue a career as a Psychiatrist or Analytical Chemist. His accomplishments include receiving a full-ride Questbridge Scholarship, receiving an AVID Senior Standout awards which included a $5,000 scholarship and receiving his State Seal of Biliteracy. Tan’s favorite high school activities include Friday Night Live, participating in CSF and the National Social Studies Honor Society. A resident of Garden Grove, Tan also attended Clinton Elementary and Doig Intermediate. He is the son of Tung and Yen Nguyen.

Adrian Pineda

Bolsa Grande High School: Adrian Pineda will attend the University of Stanford to major in Aerospace Engineering. He hopes to pursue a career as an Aerospace Engineer at NASA. His accomplishments include becoming a Questbridge National College Match Finalist for a full ride to Stanford University, earning the UC Berkeley Regents and Chancellor Scholar and receiving the AVID Senior Scholarship. Adrian’s favorite high school activities include playing on the baseball team, attending field trips with AVID and hanging out with friends at school events. A resident of Garden Grove, Adrian also attended Peters Elementary and Irvine Intermediate. He is the son of Erika Cueva and Daniel Pineda.

Sky Bui

Bolsa Grande High School: Sky Bui will attend the University of California, Berkeley to major in Bioengineering. He hopes to pursue a career as a Biomedical Engineer. His accomplishments include earning the AP Scholar with Honors Award, becoming a USC Board Scholar, receiving the Regents and Chancellor’s Scholarship and becoming a CSF Seymour Memorial Finalist. Sky’s favorite high school activities include founding the Youth Advisory Council, volunteering in Key Club, California Scholarship Federation and National Honor Society and spending time with friends. A resident of Garden Grove, Sky also attended Stanford Elementary and Alamitos Intermediate. He is the son of Kevin Hung Bui and Tiffany Anh-Thu Nguyen.

Mikey Nguyen

Garden Grove High School: Mikey Nguyen will attend the University of California, San Diego to major in Computer Science. He hopes to pursue a career as a Software Engineer or Research Scientist. His accomplishments include becoming a Gates Scholar, Questbridge College Prep Scholar, Simon Scholar and a four-time Summa Cum Laude recipient for the National Latin Exam. Mikey’s favorite high school activities include Wrestling, Track and Field and Boys’ League. He is the son of Kim Hoa and Tony Nguyen.

Tatiana Lua

Hare High School: Tatiana Lua will attend Santa Ana Community College to major in Nursing. She hopes to pursue a career as a Neonatal Nurse. Her accomplishments include earning Principal’s Honor Roll, Salutatorian and becoming CPR and AED Certified in her CTE Medical Pathway. Tatiana’s favorite high school activities include Water Polo, attending the Senior BBQ and volunteering at Zeyen Elementary School. Tatiana also attended Russell Elementary and Fitz Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, she is the daughter of Yadira Alfaro and Juan Carlos Lua Garcia.

Taryn Smith

Hare High School: Taryn Smith will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design to major in Animation and minor in Film. She hopes to own her own Animation Studio. Her accomplishments include being named Student of the Quarter, participating in the First Impressions Art Exhibit and being on Honor Roll. Taryn’s favorite high school activity includes working on Top Dawg Production videos. A resident of Garden Grove, she is the daughter of Monique Cantu.

Jeffrey Duong

La Quinta High School: Jeffrey Duong will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Mechanical Engineering. He hopes to pursue a career at NASA. His accomplishments include tutoring other students, volunteering as an emcee for the school’s talent show and scoring a five on the AP World History Exam. Jeffrey’s favorite high school activities include participating in the school’s blood drive and attending homecoming. A resident of Garden Grove, Jeffrey also attended Ethan Allen Elementary and McGarvin Intermediate. He is the son of Binh Duong and Thuy Oanh Truong.

Jenny Nguyen

Los Amigos High School: Jenny Nguyen will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Biology. She hopes to pursue a career as a Radiologist. Her accomplishments include being named a Simon Scholar, founding the Make-A-Wish Club at Los Amigos and raising $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, becoming an AP Scholar with Distinction and receiving a college scholarship as a  Questbridge National College Match Finalist. Jenny’s favorite high school activities include attending community service opportunities with the National Honor Society, taking AP Environmental Science and volunteering at the Discovery Cube. Jenny also attended Thomas Paine Elementary and Fitz Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, she is the daughter of Kim Nguyen.

Kathleen Huynh

Los Amigos High School: Kathleen Huynh will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Biomedical Engineering. Her accomplishments include graduating with and Associate of Arts Degree through the Early College Academy, being a Questbridge College Prep Scholar and National College Match Finalist, earning the UCI Regents Scholarship and becoming an AP Scholar with Distinction. Kathleen’s favorite high school activities include Senior Prom, late night chats with friends and her Summer Internship at DoubleTree Suites by Hilton. Kathleen also attended Susan B. Anthony Elementary and Irvine Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, she is the daughter of Ngoc Thu Diep and Long Van Huynh.

Bill Bach

Pacifica High School: Bill Bach will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Human Biology. He hopes to pursue a career as a Physician. His accomplishments include receiving the Outstanding First Year Chemistry Student Award from the American Chemical Society, being named Mariner of the Month and being a Salutatorian. Bill’s favorite high school activities include attending the State Leadership Conference hosted by the Health Occupations Students of America, volunteering with Project Vietnam and planning events with Sociedad de Honoraria Hispanica. Bill also attended Patton Elementary and Bell Intermediate. A resident of Stanton, he is the son of Hao Vinh and Ha Le.

Jimmy Hong

Pacifica High School: Jimmy Hong will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Biochemistry. He hopes to pursue a career as a General or Cardiothoracic Surgeon. His accomplishments include winning the gold medal at the Southern California Percussion Alliance for the first time in eleven years for Pacifica, competing in the Contest of Forensic Science at Cal-HOSA and being recognized by the CTE Pathway Program for completing over 300 hours in medical-related volunteering. Jimmy’s favorite high school activities include going to football games, drumline practices and hanging out with his friends. A resident of Garden Grove, Jimmy also attended Patton Elementary and Bell Intermediate. He is the son of James Hong and Teresa Kyung Sook Hong.

Winston Ta

Pacifica High School: Winston Ta will attend California State University, Long Beach to major in Computer Science. He hopes to pursue a career as a Software Developer or AI Engineer. His accomplishments include receiving the AP Scholar with Distinction award, achieving Principal’s Honor Roll and being named the 2019 National Piano Guild Audition International winner. Winston’s favorite high school activities include spending time with friends, volunteering with the National Honor Society and attending school field trips. A resident of Garden Grove, Winston also attended Patton Elementary and Bell Intermediate. He is the son of Hong Ta and Shannon Nguyen.

Helen Nguyen

Rancho Alamitos High School: Helen Nguyen will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Environmental Science. She hopes to pursue a career as an Environmental Lawyer or Researcher at NASA. Her accomplishments include earning a perfect score on her AP Research Exam, having a poem published by the American Library of Poetry, earning her AP Capstone Diploma, earning her Certificate of Merit Award for Piano and being a member of the Orange County Transportation Authority Teen Council. Helen’s favorite high school activities include fundraising for Environmental Club, building friendships in marching band and completing AP Literature group projects. A resident of Garden Grove, Helen also attended Lawrence Elementary and Alamitos Intermediate. She is the daughter of Hoa Tran and Andy Nguyen.

Maria Joyeno

Santiago High School: Maria Joyeno is currently deciding which university she would like to attend. She hopes to pursue a career as a Forensic Investigator. Her accomplishments include being on Honor Roll all four years of high school, participating in an internship with United Way OC Youth Career Program, achieving AP Scholar with Distinction and being part of the Early College Academy program. Maria’s favorite high school activities include hanging out with her friends, interacting with her classmates and participating in school events, field trips and dances. Maria also attended Hazard Elementary and Fitz Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, she is the daughter of Juliana Serrano and Cresencio Joyeno.

Donna Nguyen

Santiago High School: Donna Nguyen will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Biology. She hopes to pursue a career as a Doctor. Her accomplishments include receiving twenty Orange County Academic Decathlon medals, the National Merit Commended Student award, being named an AP Scholar with Honor and receiving the State Seal of Biliteracy. Donna’s favorite high school activities include participating in the OC Academic Decathlon, volunteering with the California Scholarship Federation and visiting museums with the Fine Arts Club. A resident of Garden Grove, Donna also attended Peters Elementary and Walton Intermediate. She is the daughter of Minh Tan Kieu and Thanh Binh Nguyen.
