GGUSD Names Elementary School Spelling Bee Champion

Spelling Bee Winner

Allen Elementary School sixth grade student Mason Marquez was named champion of Garden Grove Unified School District’s 34th Annual Spelling Bee for elementary students held on March 23 at the Edgar District Meeting Center.

Marquez correctly spelled the deciding word, boisterous, to become the top speller among 44 elementary schools in GGUSD. Second place went to Enders Elementary School student Jimmy Duong.

The Spelling Bee is organized by the Office of K-6 Instruction and includes each elementary schools’ top speller from fourth through sixth grade. GGUSD Board of Education Vice President Lan Nguyen, Superintendent Gabriela Mafi, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education Lisa Swartz, and Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Rick Nakano attended the Spelling Bee to cheer on the students.

“The Spelling Bee is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the hard work of our scholars,” said Board of Education Vice President Lan Nguyen. “We are proud of our district’s top spellers for the practice and preparation they invested in this rigorous competition.”
