Fifteen AVID seniors from Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) were awarded more than $137,000 in college scholarships during the 2022 AVID Senior Standout Recognition & Scholarship Presentation hosted on April 19 by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE).  The event recognizes impressive senior standout students who are part of the AVID program at high schools across Orange County.

“The AVID program makes a significant impact on our students’ lives by ensuring our students graduate high school ready to tackle the rigor of college and navigate their path toward lifelong success,” said Board of Education Trustee Walter Muneton.

During the countywide celebration, La Quinta High School AVID Senior Standout Morgan Nguyen was one of two students chosen from across Orange County to deliver a keynote speech about the impact AVID has made on her academic career and plans for the future.

Senior standout students from GGUSD included Kylee Huynh, Bolsa Grande High School; Nancy Vu, Garden Grove High School; Morgan Nguyen, La Quinta High School, Kevin Guillen, Los Amigos High School; Nhu Hoang, Pacifica High School; Shelby Culross, Rancho Alamitos High School; and Valerie Garcia, Santiago High School.

GGUSD is a leader in college readiness and outperforms the county and state in the number of high school seniors completing rigorous college entrance exams, due in large part, to the widespread implementation of AVID in GGUSD intermediate and high schools. Alamitos Intermediate, Doig Intermediate School and Santiago High School have been named national demonstration schools by the AVID program.   GGUSD continues to consistently infuse AVID strategies and opportunities at the elementary and secondary levels while offering the AVID elective at all intermediate and high school sites.
