McGarvin Student Named Spelling Bee Champion

McGarvin Intermediate School eighth grader Darla Do earned the title of champion of the district’s 35th Annual Spelling Bee for seventh and eighth grade students.  The event was held January 18 at the Edgar District Meeting Center. 

Darla correctly spelled the deciding word, neonatology, becoming the top speller among intermediate school students in GGUSD.

“We are proud of our top spellers who invest countless hours into studying for this competition,” said Board of Education Vice President Teri Roco. “This competition requires top-notch study skills, focus and perseverance and these students should be extremely proud of their academic accomplishment.” 


The district champion and the nine runners-up will represent the district at the Orange County Spelling Competition. The second place speller Metexca Nguyen was also from McGarvin Intermediate School. Other top ten winners include Alamitos student Alan Nguyen, third place;  Fitz student Minh Nguyen, fourth place; Bell student Zack Nguyen, fifth place; Ralston student Daniel Nguyen, sixth place; Ralston student Alex Shin, seventh place; Walton student Genevie Nguyen, 8th place; Doig student Tyra Ho, ninth place, Bell student Katelyn Yun, tenth place.


Each of the district’s 10 intermediate schools entered its four best spellers in the district competition. 

School Board Vice President Teri Rocco and Director of 7-12 Instruction Sandra Valencia presented trophies to the top 10 spellers, and all contest entrants received certificates of participation.
